Malaysia

Kuala lumpur & Singapore

overcast 36 °C

So its the 20th of December and we are on our way to Kuala Lumpur, we were picked up by minibus at 7.30am and was stuck on it until we got over the border into Malaysia at 10pm, while we was crossing the border we ended up getting fined because we overstayed in Thailand for 2 days, it was only £20 each though. At 11.30pm we got on a coach and got taken to kuala lumpur, we got to the city centre at 4am and we wasn't able to check in at the guest house until 2pm, so we went and sat in macdonalds for a few hours, with loads of other travellers!
By 8am we were so bored and tired we decided to go and try check in, we took a train and a taxi to the guesthouse and luckily they had the room free, so we dumped our bags and slept for a couple of hours!
We was only in kuala lumpur for a couple of days so as soon as we woke up we took a train to the centre again, when we got there, there was a nandos so we had one and for us both it came to £9.. After we went to see the twin towers, on the way we passed the single tower aswell.
We spent hours there looking around, the twin towers were massive! We had some dinner in the food court inside and then took a walk around the city, its full of big tall buildings and shopping malls, on the way back to the train station there was a concert on so we stopped there for a bit, then got the train back to the guesthouse.
When we got back the 2 owners wanted us to have a drink with them, so we sat drinking vodka till 4am, meanwhile Emma was getting asked to join the owners model agency.
The next morning we took the train to a place called bat cave when kuala lumpurs biggest and most famous temple was, we climbed 232 steps to look at the temple at the top inside the caves then back down to the train.
In the evening we went to nandos again for our dinner then a night Market which started at 10pm and ended at 4am, we bought a couple of bits and bobs then went back after a couple of hours and had another drink with the owners and played some Malaysian games, the next day we were leaving to go to Singapore, so after we packed we got a taxi to the train station and after a couple hours of waiting around, we got on the train at 2pm, we were meant to arrive in singapore at 8pm but we arrived at 9.30pm, our passports got checked at the border on the train and then we got off and queued up for immigration, when we finally got seen he passed us through to the xray and I had ciggies in my bag, apparently I was only allowed 1 packet into Singapore where I had 15 packs, they asked how many we had and I only got a few packs out, I got took into a room where they said the fine was $100 which was £50, we didn't have any dollars on us so we had to go out to an ATM then back in and pay the fine, where they never rescanned the baggage, it was a nightmare and took us nearly 2 hours to get through!!
We went to our hotel via taxi which was in the red light district! By this time it was midnight, so we went to find something to eat, everywhere was noodles after noodles and rice after rice, we sat down where it was busy ordered some food, only ate half of it and went back to the hotel to sleep.
The next day it was raining in the morning so we waited until it eased off a bit and went to Marina bay in the city centre, again it was full of massive buildings and one hotel which must of been atleast 150 floors with a road ontop!
We walked around the bay and over the bridge into all the shops, and before we knew it, it was night.. As it was Christmas eve there were loads of thongs going on, we sat down and watched a band play, went and watched a water show, seen Santa, the gingerbread man and the elves, then on the way back to the train station we noticed loads of people were Carol singing, so we went and joined in on the harbour!
The next day when we got up it was christmas day so we went to a different part of the city, where there were people dancing, and bands playing, we spent the day there had noodles and spring rolls for Christmas dinner :( and Christmas Starbucks for dessert. For the evening we went back to Marina bay and watched some more Christmas shows!
The next day we were checking out of Singapore and going to Australia, but we had the full day, so we ended up going to a place called sentosa island where universal studios is and the hard rock cafe.. After we went to little India for a couple of hours, ended up eating a curry having a look around, there wasnt much there apart from a lot of jewellery shops.. Then went to the airport. (best airport we have been to yet!)

Krabi, Phuket & Phi Phi Island

Thailand

sunny

We sat right at the front outside of the boat all the way in the sun, after 3 and half hours on the boat, we got put onto a coach which was the dirtiest one yet and then 4 hours later we arrived at Krabi.
It was late when we arrived so we went out for something to eat and then went to bed because everyone was tired from travelling.
The next day all 4 of us went and had a look at where we were, we were stopping at a place called Ao Nang beach.
We walked around for most of the day, stopped for street food and drink occasionally. We all ended up having a Thai Massage together, it was Emma's first time and she loved it!!
In the evening we had a look around the night Market and went for something to eat.
The next day they were heading off to phuket so we hired a mo-ped again. We went to Krabi town for a walk and a look around, then headed off to the beach for a swim.. Krabi is a gorgeous place full of different little islands dotted around everywhere. After the beach we found a food Market, so we had something for lunch.
The day after we didn't do much just lazed around watching movies.
The following day though we were off to Phuket, we got picked up at the hotel at 10am then dropped off at the bus station, a minibus picked us up at 12 and we got to Phuket at 3.30, at first the driver couldn't find our hotel which is no surprise there, then when we finally got there we was in the middle of no-where literally, we had to hire a mo-ped again as we were so far out , we took a look around where we were stopping at Patong Beach, and it's not for us! It's full of buildings and pubs, clubs and shops. We headed along towards the beach and Phuket carnival was on so there were stalls everywhere and always something going on.
The next day we wanted to have a look around a different part of Phuket so we drove out to Phuket town but it wasn't very nice, afterwards we went to karan beach which was only up the road, it was so hot there we couldn't stay for very long!
Of the nighttime we was meeting up with Ali and Andrew, They showed us around the parts that they knew and it was much better than what we found, we had a few drinks in some bars then went to a club and stopped there for most of the night dancing and drinking. In the club the dj was American and Phuket is full of australians so there were loads aswell, there were breakdancers on and drinking games aswell.
When we were walking back to the hotel we went down the main strip of Phuket and it was full of lady boys everywhere, dancing on the bars and in the street, there were also lots of people asking us to go to watch the famous ping pong show, we soon found out it wasn't actual ping pong and we passed!!
The following day we was all hungover so we had breakfast together, went for another massage (which was the best one  we've had) and lay on the beach all day.
It was there last night of there holiday so we had a meal with them and another drink of the night-time, then said goodbye till we see them again (when we go to Australia.)
The next day was our last day in Thailand, we were a bit sad cuz Thailand is beautiful all over and we would miss being here, so we decided to go on a day trip to phi phi island an hour on the boat from Phuket, first we got picked up from our hotel at 8am, taken to the port and got a boat which took an hour, we got there and went snorkelling for an hour, there were fish everywhere.. We then got back on the boat and went 45 mins to another island where we had lunch and stopped on the beach for a bit.. Next we got took to another island called mayo beach and it was the best thing we have seen so far, the views were amazing, after we got took to somewhere called kayo island and we stopped there for a couple of hours on the beach, we sunbathed for a bit but then we went snorkelling again for another hour, we went round the island in all the coral and seen loads of fish again, even swordfish!
We were taken back to our hotel and it was our last night.. We were tired from the day trip, so we just had something to eat up the road and then packed for our long bus trip to Kuala Lumpur.

Bangkok, Koh Samui & Koh Phangan

When we got back to bangkok we tried to get a taxi to our hotel but there was so many people and it was so unorganised we ended up gettin a tuk-tuk, it wasn't far but when we got there they said as it was only 7am we couldn't check in, so we dumped our bags and went for a maccies breakfast.
We had another look around Bangkok to waste time later on.
The next day we was booked on a tour we went to see the floating markets, which were on a river, and you went along looking at all the different boat stall on your own boat, we spent an hour and half there then went for lunch which didn't look great so we didn't eat much.
After lunch went to look at a Thai world war 2 museum and the bridge over the river Kwai.
After an hour there we took a drive to the tiger temple, we got there and there were tigers everywhere, we went individually to touch the tigers and have a picture taken with all of them, then took a walk round the  grounds to look at the cubs and bears.
The drive back to Bangkok was 4 hours long and then we had to wait for the bus for 30 minutes, the bus was uncomfortable again but we tried to sleep, we got off again half way through for people to eat, then took another 3 hours before we got to chumporn to get the boat to koh samui.
When we got there we waited a while before we boarded the boat, once we were on it was 5 hours to koh samui, we dropped people off at koh tao, koh phangan then us at koh samui.
When we got to out hotel we was staying right on the beach 10 yards from the sea in a shack, we dumped our bags again and went for a sunbathe and dip in the sea! We took a walk along the beach where there were all different bars and restaurants.
That night we decided to stay in for something to eat, so we ate in Thr restaurant then went back to our shack.. The shacks were full up with people and we ended up sitting with 8 other people talking and drinking, 2 people were from Canada, Jason and Ryan, 1 Columbian, Ali, 1 Australian, Andrew, 1 German, Alex, 2 Swedish girls (cant remember there names) and 1 man from Poland, (again ?), it was raining slightly so we was dodging from our beach hut to the sand for most of the night.. Late on 2 of the lads stole one of the kayaks on the beach and went canoeing in the pitch black!!
The day after we hired a mo-ped so we could have a look around the island, invest had a look we went back to the beach shack to get ready.
We took the bike about 15miles to go and get something to eat, once we'd finished and on the way back in started to rain very heavily.. It got so bad we had to stop and get off because we couldn't see and we were soaked, we parked the bike and went under someones pith to keep our of the rain, where we parke the bike on the road it was flooding quickly and before we knew it the stand was under water and it was still rising, we decided to get back on the bike and drive back, we drive about 10mph in the rain soaking wet hardly seeing the road.
The next day it rained all day so there was nothing we could really do.. The 2 girls that was on our trek in the jungle turned up, Ella and Gemma, they were staying in the beach shacks for 4 nights funnily enough.
On the nighttime when it finally stopped raining we all went and sat on the beach again drinking and playing games all night.
The next day was our final morning in koh samui, so we had breakfast then got took to the boat to go to koh phangan which was only 45
mins away.
We took a taxi to our resort which was more beautiful than the last place, we aren't directly on the beach but its still literally a 20 second walk away. The rooms are much bigger than before and there is a chain for the toilet which we didn't have in koh samui, so we were forever putting bowls of water down the loo when we went the toilet, but we do still have cold showers here unluckily.
We sat on the beach for the whole day, the beach, the sea and the sunset are the most gorgeous thing we have ever seen. The sea is so calm, the beach is full of sand and there was hardly anyone around.
The next day we decided to have a lazy day, so after breakfast we went and sat round the pool all day and the beach which was right next to the pool, so we went there after lunch.
Of the night time, we decided to hire a mo-ped again it's so cheap only £4 for 24 hours and then we get to see so much more of the island, which we did.
The following day we still had the mo-ped so we had a look around the island of the daytime did some shopping and had a picnic by the sea, then went back to the pool for the day.
The day after was the full moon party, the 10th December, so we went to get something to wear and then went to see our friends that we met in koh samui.
At about midday we went back to out apartment and got ready for the party.. I collected the girls from there hotel and we went to the beach bungalows next door which was where the rest of our friends were to start drinking.. We was there for about 6 hours till we got picked up at 11pm by the taxi to go to the full moon party.. We arrived at the full moon party on the beach and there were thousands and thousands of people everywhere drinking an dancing, we were there till about 5am and some people wanted to go back, so we headed back to the beach bungalows, a few people went to bed but we stayed up, because we would only feel worse if we did! There were 3 of us in the end that ended staying up, and we were joined by another lad that was stopping there aswell, Sam from England. We carried on drinking all through the day gradually getted joined by people who woke up.
At midday a few of us went back to our hotel as we had a pool and just relaxed around there all day.
Later on we all got ready and for 7 of us it was our last night so we went back to our friends beach bungalows and had some food and drank a little more.
After 41 hours of drinking and no sleep we were nakered so we ended up goin back to our beach shack to sleep at 10pm.
The next day we were leaving to go to Krabi so we had some breakfast and packed up our things, got picked up at 11.30am to get the boat, we met 2 of our friends Ali the Columbian girl and Andrew the Australian, who were also goin to Krabi with us and funnily enough
stopping in the same hotel.

Budget accommodation in Thailand

Read reviews from other Travellerspoint members.

Thailand - Bangkok & Chiang Mai

Once we got to Bangkok, it was very different to India, we got a taxi to our hotel which wad just on the outskirts of the city centre and then went to get something to eat and macdonalds!
We stayed in Bangkok for 3 days, which was plenty we just spent all day sight seeing and shopping, wr booked all our tours and accommodation, etc through a travel information centre which we later found out we got ripped off, but it saves us looking for accommodation everyday and transport. Bangkok is a busy town just lyk all capitals, but the people here are the most laid back ever!!
On the 23rd we went up north via bus upto Chiang Mai, the bus took 10 hours and we was right at the front upstairs, it was uncomfortable and cold, the air-con is on all night, there was a film on for the whole bus which was American but dubbed in Thai, we left at 7.30pm, then at midnight the bus stops and everyone gets off for food before getting back on for another 5hours drive.
Once we got to Chiang Mai we were picked up by our tour guide and taken back to his guest house till it was light and time to go to our hotel.
Our hotel was beautiful!
On the first day after catching up with sleep we went and had a look around, Chiang Mai is only small but very pretty.
The day we was getting picked up by our tour guide again and taken on a 3 day 2 night trek in the jungle!
We headed off to the jungle and on the way stopped off at an elephant camp, we rode the elephants on our own for an hour in the jungle an then after fed them, it was amazing! We then got dropped off and walked an hour to a waterfall, we went in the waterfall and behind it and it was freezing, but good!
We walked another 2 hours and came to a camp where we stopped the night with a family who live there.
We had some food which was gorgeous, green Thai curry with sticky rice, then after we all sat round the campfire talking and drinking.
The following day we went walking again and came to another waterfall where we went in, then noodles for lunch.
That night we went to another camp with another family right on a waterfall, we had red Thai curry, which was the best Thai food we have ever eaten, and pumpkins. We spent the night round the campfire and played cards.
The next day was the last day of the trek and we took a walk to another waterfall where we had lunch and went bamboo rafting, it was good going down the waterfall on a sticks of bamboo, we all fell off loads of times and right at the end Emma got pushed in by the boat man, she got him back though by pushing him back in!
That night after we got dropped back off at the hotel we went to our local Market, which was so cheap, we couldn't really buy alot of things, because of carrying them, but we did get a few bits.
The following day we went to our laundrette which was round the corner, then went a massage parlour, they are everywhere here and so cheap, 1 hours full body massage which I had cost £3 and Emma had a pedicure which cost £3 aswell.
The next day was the 29th of the day we relaxed then of the nighttime we went for a fish spa pedicure and then we went and watched some Thai boxing, there were 8 fights and the boxers were tiny all weighing between 6 - 8 stone. The headline fight was an English girl fighting a Thai man, which she won after the 2nd round!
We then went to the night Market and Emma had her acrylics off at 11.30pm, while I sat in the pub.
The next day was our last day in Chiang Mai and we went for a walk around the city, then ended up hiring a mo-ped, we took the mo-ped up the mountains to one of Chiang Mai's famous temples, we climbed up 300 odd stairs and then had a look at the beautiful views.. Once we were finished at the temple we tried to go into the palace nearby but it was shut by then.
We handed back the mo-ped and then went to get ready for another 10 hour bus ride.
The bus rode was bad, we got food again which was kidney flavoured bun, water and orange juice, we had a television each, so we watched a film and then ended up falling asleep for the whole journey.

2 Idiots Abroad

sunny 33 °C

So now we are in India we have planned to go to Agra by train but bailed.. So we are now sitting in the airport on the way to Goa.
We arrived in mumbai on the 6th November and it was a big culture shock, we were escorted from the airport to our taxi by who we thought was our driver, he put our bags in the boot and then came to the window for money. We sat in the back while a load of indians were gathered around us talking and staring. When our driver eventually got in, the taxi wouldn't start so there were 3 men pushing from behind.
When we got going we approached the road and there were cars and bikes everywhere cutting people up driving the wrong way and beeping, everyone beeps.
We arrived at the hotel after what seemed like 2hours.. But it was only an hour, then we checked in.
Once we were sorted we went out and had a look around to see what there was, we ended up going to the Gateway of India and it was beautiful, there were people everywhere and it was right by the harbour. After a while we walked back to the hostel and along the way we stopped at a little Indian place and had pizza and 2 cokes which came to £2.50.
The next evening we got a taxi to chowpati beach and sat watching the sea for a while.. We had a look around the food Market on the beach and walked along the harbour.
When we got back we went to cafe universal which was behind our hostel for something to eat.
The next day we decided to go on a boat trip, which was an experience. We went back to the gateway of India which was where the boat trips were and paid £2 for us both to go on a 4 hour trip! We stood for 20 minutes and waited for the man to lead us on the boat and while we were waiting we got asked by a man if we could have a picture we thought he meant us to take the picture but he meant he wanted a picture of us both with his children.. Next thing we knew there was 100 people around us and they were queueing up to have there picture taken with us! It was very sureal!!
Once we boarded the boat we went to elephant island which was just off the coast of Mumbai, we had a look around but didn't stay for long and boarded the boat back to Mumbai. Once we got back we freshened up and went back to cafe universal to have a meal, as this looked the only clean place around and it was full of people. We had a meal of Chicken chips veg and pepper sauce which was gorgeous and it cost £5.
Once we got back to the hostel we decided we couldn't stay much longer and wanted to go to goa so we booked a flight for the next day.
The next day came and we packed up our things and got a taxi to the airport, we got there early but checked in and waited for our flight anyway. 3 hours later we boarded, the plane which was full of Indians making dirty noises and smelling everything out!
1 hour later we arrived in goa.

So we are now in goa and it's amazing here, when we got here we got a taxi to our hotel and when we got here the hotel was lovely with air con thank god!! We dropped off our stuff and had a look around, we are based in colva 100 yards from the beach, outside our hotel there is like a strip that sells everything from bags to ornaments.
We sat down in a restaurant and ordered the best curry we have ever had with rice and naan bread all for just £8 with drinks.
The next morning we got up and went to the beach, the beach here is gorgeous, we took a walk along the shore and then come to a beach shack called Anthony's, we didnt have our towels with us, to put on the beds (which were free) but that didnt matter cuz they soon sorted some out for us. We had some breakfast and lied there for about 10 hours in the sun, drinking! The people who worked at the bar treat you like kings and queens wanting to help you in everyway.
The time got to about 6 o'clock and we still didn't wanna go back so we sat there and watch the sunset on the amazing beach, we have never seen anythin so beautiful!!
After a while we decided to go back and freshen up to have some food.
The next day soon came and we decided to again stay and lie on the beach all day.
For the night time we wanted to go to the place where we had the nice curry on the first day so we went back there.. We met a south African guy who was in India writing, he was. Journalist and he had been to 25 states of India all different he said, he didn't really like it much because of the people staring and the culture.
The following day we were off again to a place called calangute beach still in goa, we got here by rickenshaw, it's 50kms and took an hour and half for £10! Again even though it's still in Goa it's very different there are loads more people than Colva here. We dropped our stuff in the room and decided to have a look around, there are little Market stalls everywhere again and the beach is just at the bottom of our road.. We took a walk to have a look and when we got here there were about 1000 people on the beach, half of them in the sea still fully clothed.
We took another rickenshaw to Baga beach which was the next one up and again it was full of people, we took a walk along the shore and before we knew it we was back at our beach.
The next day was Sunday 13th and we wanted to go to the beach all day AGAIN! so we went down and took a walk along and come to a quite spot where there wasn't many people, so we sat down, when we got here like all day there were kids and women selling things along the beach, but there was one little boy who was selling crisps, we got talking to him and he told us that his dad was a drunk and his mum could only speak Indian, his brothers and sisters went to school but he was just 14 and the only one working, he said that yesterday he made £2.50 all day for 9 hours in the blazing sun selling crisps, he sat down in the sand next to us and we gave him some of our pineapple. We asked him when does he eat and he said he only eats rice and water of the nighttime only, he said he was the master of naughts and crosses so we had a game, and he was!
The next couple of days we went to the beach to soak up the sun, on the last day which was the 15th we had our camera, £15 and bank card stolen, so that night I went to the police station and had to make a report they spoke ok English in there but didnt really no what to do.. We didn't feel like going out so we ordered dominoes pizza in!
The next morning we was moving hostel and it was only up the road wth a family run place, the woman was called sunshine and was a clean freak which emma loved, we went back to the police station to collect the insurance certificate, after an hour we got it and went back to our hostel. That day we decided to hire a moped on the mad roads of India so we could see a bit more of Goa, we took a drive round to the different towns.
On the next day the 17th we still had the moped and took a drive up to old goa, it was beautiful up there with all the churches and different culture.
The next town up was panaji we parked up and had a drink then lost the bike so spent half an hour looking for it, we found a park later on and had some lunch before driving back.
That night we went out with a girl I worked with for something to eat, ended up stayin out till early morning  at a club..
The next day was our last day in India , we was planning to o to the Market but had a hangover so passed, we had the moped still so of the night time we found somewhere nice to eat, I had a curry as it was our last night and Emma had a roast dinner lol.
The next day we was up early to go to the airport as we was flying for the whole day, first we was flying from goa to Mumbai, the flight wasn't to bad, but we did have a croissant which when I bit into the middle of it found out it was a curry one, once we got to Mumbai we was told we could get a free bus from the domestic airport to the international one, we waited for he bus but as we only have an itinerary not tickets they said we couldn't take the free bus and had to get a taxi, so we did, once we got to the international airport we checked in and got a flight from Mumbai to Bangkok!
